As a first year attendee at AORN it was my pleasure to represent the members of the eChapter. It was wonderful to hear about all the good works that have been done on behalf of our chapter. All of the delegate representatives were very impressive and seem to have a good grasp on what is critical for periOperative nursing in today’s healthcare environment. The House of Delegates discussions and the Forums were informative and there was some exciting debate. Participating in the decision making of such a great organization was very educational. The whole experience has inspired me to become more involved in the process. The educational session were fantastic and I will use the knowledge I gained to improve my practice and that of my staff. I was also able to meet some of the nicest people in the world, my fellow echapter members. I am glad I have joined eChapter, and will continue to stay involved.

Thank you to E-Chapter for allowing me the privilege to serve as a delegate to the 2010 AORN Congress in Denver. The “business” of our association continues to be relevant and extremely interesting. One member-one vote dominated discussions and brought out emotional viewpoints. Isn’t it great that we care and have a vested voice in our organization and the future of AORN.

The educational offerings were valuable to me and the Surgery Center where I work. I typically try to take classes in the Ambulatory track, but often have to make hard choices between leadership, ambulatory and practice. That is a nice problem to have! Dr. Gawande’s presentation was informative and his surgical checklist certainly is not a new concept to the OR nurses I know.

AORN is also the time to reconnect with other E-Chapter members. I love meeting up with people I haven’t seen in a year! Thanks to the leadership of E-Chapter and the work that is done throughout the year to make our AORN Congress a success.

The 2010 Congress in Denver was a fantastic experience! This was my first Congress as a delegate. Thanks to all of you for your kindness and patience in guiding me to where I was to be and walking me through the process without complaint! I was pleasantly surprised as to how the delegate experience changed and expanded my perspective of the Congress event. The ability to actually participate and contribute to AORN practices creates a warm feeling of being part of improving patient care in the OR.

I truly enjoyed running into old friends and networking with many new ones that share a common bond! I also felt a rekindling of energy toward OR practice, the issues, and even parliamentary procedure. I found myself reading everything I could about the topics we would be discussing and felt like I had a voice in the organization.

I am looking forward to serving in the delegate role for many years to come. I would highly recommend serving as a delegate and eChapter involvement to any AORN member. Thank you for the wonderful privilege of representing eChapter as a delegate. I look forward to next year!

I have been a member of AORN since 1990, yet never been actively involved in a local AORN Chapter until the eChapter allowed me the flexibility to be an active member! Thus, this is my first year to ever hold the honor of being a delegate. I must say that I never realized the “going’s on” in the House of Delegates and the decision making that takes place there. I was certainly enlightened on the parliamentary and legislative procedures, and was proud to be able to vote in an historic decision with “One member, One vote”.

Networking with colleagues is always a plus at Congress, but being a delegate was the icing on the cake. I thank you for the privilege of representing the eChapter this year!

What a thrill to be in Denver, home of AORN! And what a Congress it was; there was passionate debate and ultimately radical changes made in our bylaws this year. The theme of “One member-One vote” dominated the conversation everywhere, even before the 1St House of Delegates. Members were emotional about the (potential) change in the long standing tradition of delegate assignments from the chapter level and wondered what would become of this practice. However, after much debate and conversation, it became clear that the delegation of members from chapters would not be affected. The adoption on one-member-one-vote simply meant any member in good standing who was attending the Congress, could cast a vote at the annual business meeting. And ALL members could vote for the slate of officers, even from home. This is a HUGE change for our organization and (I believe) a HUGE step forward.

It was great to see so many eChapter members in Denver- our table became a focal point for those who wanted to meet and greet. We proudly “uploaded” 68 of our potential 87 delegates! As always, AORN Congress was a needed shot-in-the-arm to invigorate us and remind us of our passion for periOperative nursing. I can hardly wait for Philadelphia 2011!

It was a great Congress this year in Denver! I was able to socialize with other eChapter members, and I also converted many Congress attendee’s to the wonderful chapter of  eChapter! Many did not realize all that we have to offer, it did not take long for them to realize just how important of a chapter we are, and all that we have to offer.

It was also a great time for me to spread the word about how to become a Magnet hospital. I socialized with many different nurses from around the country regarding Magnet status, and what it could do for them! As a delegate, I feel we accomplished many things in the house, and brought issues up that need to be contend with. Go eChapter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“The 2010 AORN Congress proved to be very exciting. I was honored to be your delegate. The discussion on the hot issues of dues increase and one member, one vote, was excellent and both sides of the question was debated well. I think the movement of the organization was very progressive and forward thinking this year. I commend our leadership for preparing us well for the issues at hand and for responding quickly to the debate by offering a good compromise in the end. The eChapter breakfast was well organized and well attended. I appreciate the opportunity to meet everyone face to face. We have a very impressive group of members and leaders in eChapter. I am proud to be a member and to have represented you this year. Thank you for the opportunity.”

I want to thank Terri, Sherry and all of the eChapter members who made me feel welcome at my first Congress and my first-time delegate experience.

This was my first Congress in my 23 years of periOperative nursing and it was an amazing experience. Fortunately for me, I was able to meet Terri early on in the week of Congress. As a member of both my local Chapter and a member of eChapter, I was eager to meet some of those people who I only get to read about. I was honored to be asked to be a delegate for eChapter and took this responsibility seriously. I have been looking for a low key way to start getting more involved in AORN and this seems to be my answer.

Being a Delegate was a learning experience in so many ways. I was able to listen to the candidates and attend the House of Delegates for the first time. The whole delegate process is humbling for a first time attendee. I am eager to attend Congress next year in Philadelphia.

Reaching the Peak of Perioperative Performance was the theme and reaching out to all members was the order of business. I truly wish to thank eChapter for the support and Sherry Church for her encouragement to participate in this association changing congress. Attending the House of Delegates gave me the opportunity to hear both sides of the 3 major topics: Voting for Bylaws and Voting for Candidates and the dues increase.

The national economy has affected our organization and each individual member and I was thrilled to see the participation by the exhibitors and registered attendees. I was honored to listen to each and every candidate verbalize their vision of the future of AORN and expand my knowledge of their position beyond what was printed in the journal. Working the eChapter booth gave me the opportunity to get to know many members and prospective members while serving the chapter.

I look forward to a meaningful year with eChapter and look forward to meeting all of you and revisiting this wonderful opportunity in Philadelphia in 2011.

Denver was wonderful!  The weather was great we had snow, we had sun and we had temperatures in the 60's.  We learned more about the healthcare bill from people that were involved in Washington.  We also got to meet new people and see old friends.

To me it is always a learning experience as well as a reminder of what we are working for.  It is amazing to have a group of people so large and so dedicated to the same goal of patient safety and excellence in perioperative care.    There were so many diverse offerings to attend.  As always, the perioperative bowl was one of my favorites - it is a fun way of learning what you do and don't know without any pressure - unless you are on stage.  I also attended the face transplant session.  It is fascinating to see the advances we have seen in medicine over my career.  I look forward to the next phase of this procedure which is going to be published this spring.

The exhibitors show was amazing as always.  I talked to one vendor who was attending for the first time and was really overwhelmed by the size and scope of the offerings.  As always we received so many education hours on the floor.

Next year will bring new changes to both the voting and the business portions of Congress but I plan to be there and hope to see many of you there also.  It is great to have the opportunity of meeting face to face the chapter members and it is truly amazing to see the diversity of our chapter members.  Hope to see you in Philadelphia, Pa.

I was honored to participate with my nursing colleagues at the AORN Congress. It was a time of rejuvenation of spirit and energy to the Peri-operative nurse. Walking among the participants at the AORN Congress I felt the pride and commitment of all attendees; at times it was overwhelming. While flying home all I could think about was how I could get more people from Hawaii to attend the Congress in Philadelphia. Trying to share with colleagues the AORN Congress experience was like going to a great movie and trying to explain/share the story or the great plot ; I am unable to give justice to wonderful opportunity I had. One must have the experience to understand and appreciate. Thank you to all.

Congress 2011 was another great experience. I particularly enjoyed the lively discussions in the Forums and House of Delegates. AORN President Patrick Voight brought light and humor to the meetings and during the Congress voting process. I am proud to say that this year I brought 2 new E-chapter and AORN members to congress. Watching them find the value in AORN and the e-chapter confirmed my belief in what we do. The exhibit hall had both new exhibitors and continuing exhibitors. The educational Session were enlightening and thought provoking. Several of the sessions I attended gave me some “Jems” that I will be able to institute within my facility to improve patient safety. I was also able to locate several new products that were introduced at the AORN Congress that will be beneficial to my facility. I look forward to Philadelphia in 2011.

I just want to express my appreciation and thanks for considering me as a delegate at this years AORN Congress.  I found the House of Delegates interesting, instructional and enlightening.  The discussions and debates were lively and I learned quite a bit about the voting and rule procedures.  The Congress sessions were informative and the speakers well chosen.  Networking, as always was great, meeting old and new along the way, working the e-chapter table was fun as well as visiting, and answering any questions that came about.

Denver was also a good choice to host the AORN Congress.  Everyone I met was friendly and nice, the city beautiful and the diverse weather from sandals to parkas, a nice change for me.  Thanks to AORN for the discount I received for a much needed massage on Friday afternoon.  Between all the walking I did and bags I lugged around was much appreciated.

I am looking forward in anticipation of next years convention in Philadelphia.  I would be open to serve once again as a delegate if the opportunity is there. Thank you for an enjoyable, informative and well run Congress,

I was very happy to serve as a delegate, representing eChapter at the AORN 2010 Congress. This was my first Congress, and definitely won’t be my last. I am inspired by the passion that was shared by all the attendees, especially all the other delegate  representatives. The discussions and voting in the House of Delegates was so much more interesting than I had anticipated. I do hope to be able to attend future Congresses as a delegate.

As I said, this was my first congress, I want to thank Terri and Melody for their guidance throughout the week. I was a little overwhelmed with trying to plan out my day.  I enjoyed 'manning the eChapter booth as I was able to talk to many people about the benefits of eChapter membership, as well as spot some old friends from my days as a traveling nurse.

I will be presenting some of the information I learned in the sessions, as well as new products from the vendors. Hopefully, it will be well received and improve our already impressive practices. I came away from Congress inspired and with more determination to become involved with AORN and my chapter, as well as about 40 pounds of goodies from the vendors!  See you next year!

This was my first time at AORN Congress, but it definitely won’t be my last! I just can’t believe that I’ve worked in the OR all these years and have never been. I know now that I will probably never miss another one! I think the forums and the voting with other delegates was so exciting- just to be an integral part of the election process, and to see the passion displayed by these nurse-leaders was inspiring. I sat in awe of these nurses and their many accomplishments. The classes were excellent also. I realized how much I have to learn, and how anxious I am now to continue learning! I discovered resources provided by AORN that I didn’t know existed, and feel confident that they will be valuable in my daily practice. I am also thankful to the city of Denver for their wonderful hospitality. I was constantly amazed at the graciousness of the people I came in contact with during my stay. I will never forget my time there and my first experience with AORN. I hope to add many more great memories in the years to come.

As a first time delegate, I had no clue what I was getting myself into. I soaked up the experience and attended the delegate meetings, voted, and became a bigger fan of AORN and our eChapter members. I attended Congress the last three years purely for the contact hours, and now I realize that I had been cheating myself of a deeper connection to my colleagues and my profession. My delegate experience inspired me to take my head out of the sand, become more informed about the issues facing our organization, and to recommend that other nurses in my hospital attend Congress and make a difference.

I was especially impressed by the number of eChapter members that were educational speakers and national participants. Additionally, I had conversations with several members in regards to increasing my participation in AORN. Everyone was interested and encouraging. This made me feel proud to be an echapter member. So next year, if you are curious as to how you can learn more and participate in AORN and the eChapter, I suggest you become a delegate. You will walk away from the experience, changed for the better.

I appreciated the opportunity to attend the AORN 57th Congress in Denver CO last month as an eChapter Delegate. I was able to connect with colleagues that I had not seen recently, expand my horizons by learning about new technologies and procedures, attend presentations about the future of healthcare, and participate in business decisions regarding the future of our Association.

The Bylaws revisions were thoughtfully researched, presented in a manner that allowed for lively discussion, and indicate the new direction for our organization in the future. Presentations by David Gergen and Dr. Atul Gawande focused on some of the challenges facing healthcare and stimulated much interesting discussion following the programs. The exhibit floor, as always, provided information about new and upcoming products and services for perioperative patient.

Gina Moody
AORN 57th Congress was an amazing experience for me. From the first day I arrived to the last day of Congress. I attended one of the intensive education workshops, Fun with SPF-Standardized Perioperative Framework. This workshop demonstrated the value of the PNDS model and the relationship to electronic documentation SPF/AORN Syntegrity. Fun with SPF was extremely valuable to me because first quarter 2011, our periop documentation will be changing from paperwork to electronic documentation. This is an exiting time for us because we will be using this model with our new electronic record. The SPF workshop has prepared me for any potential challenges we may face as we go live with electronic documentation.

During this congress, I became a delegate and a member of the CA “grass roots” council. I had the honor to meet Monica Weisbrich, RN (State Council Leader). Monica Travels to Mexico to provide surgical services to disadvantage children with cleft palate deformities. Monica invited me to join her in one of her trips and I agreed to travel with her surgical team in November. I enjoyed attending forum and taking part in the voting process. The debates were definitely of interest since the issues would impact all AORN members. I also had the privilege to vote for AORN’s new leadership.

I am completely jazzed about this amazing opportunity and take pride of being an OR nurse. I am looking forward to next year’s congress in Philadelphia and hope to see you all there!

As always it was wonderful to be able to attend another Congress and especially in Denver, home of AORN. Activities at The House of Delegates this year confirmed how well we perioperative nurses are able to come together.  When the proposed bylaws were brought to the members, there was definite division among the troops as to whether to accept or not.  With a lot of thought, intelligent discussion, and carefully worded amendments new bylaws were adopted.  The new bylaws will make becoming a delegate attractive to many  attendees who currently choose not to. In addition, one member one vote will become a reality.  We are changing the way we do business – always a little frightening – but I think the risk we took will serve us well.

On another note, I had the privilege of attending the presentation by David Gergen.  He spoke about the issues facing the President Obama – a very thoughtful presentation.  The other presentation of note that I attended was one on checklists given by Atul Gwande.  Although his presentation was excellent and thought-provoking, I was very disappointed in his lack of the humility he espouses.  He did not recognize the very significant contributions of perioperative nurses to the WHO checklist.  I had thought he was better than that!

The 57th AORN Congress in Denver was my first experience attending such a big event. Being completely unprepared i was fortunate to get hooked up with my eChapter cohorts and ended up being a new delegate. This was probably the most interesting time I have had in awhile. Being a delegate allowed me to see a side of my professional organization that I had previously been unexposed to. Attending the required events (house of delegates etc) showed me how important it is for everyone in perioperative nursing to get involved and pay attention to the decisions that are being made by others on our behalf. I am looking forward to attending future congress sessions in the future. Oh, and did I mention it was alot of fun too?

What a great Congress experience for so many reasons. As a clinical educator I came to Congress with a long list of things to check out, networking to do, and a keen interest in the business sessions of the House of Delegates.

I presented a poster from my organization, Scottsdale Healthcare. It was “A Safe Environment of Care: Cleaning is Just One Facet.” It represented the actions taken by a multidisciplinary task force that worked for many months to effect environmental changes in just one Peri-operative site. By networking with many attendees, I concluded that many of the frustrating process problems that I encounter are common to many surgical departments. SCIP; UNIVERSAL PROTOCOL; Flash Sterilization; just to name a few.

The Forums and House of Delegate sessions were very interesting and stimulating. There was an atmosphere that seemed supportive of accomplishing the association’s business in a collegial way. I thought the presentations of both the candidates and the current Board were presented professionally and with just the right amount of detail. It was gratifying to come out with a compromise that retains the House of Delegates, but also provides for inclusion of attending members at Congress.

Once again, it was my privilege to serve AORN  and  the e-chapter as a delegate to congress. I arrived Friday, and attended the International Summit on Saturday. the day was filled with speakers around the world, sharing the practice of  perioperative  Nursing around the world. The update on project WHO was very informative and I gained insight into the work done by this team. I also had an opportunity to network with other who were  attending the summit, which is always fun and educational for me.

Opening session was just great. Our salute to the armed forces , our respect to those brave men and women reminded me once again how much it means to live in a free America. It was good to see the awards presented at Opening session, and the young man who presented the music and our national anthem had such a beautiful voice, it brought tears of joy to my eyes. Gergen's program was enlightening, and Gawande did an excellent presentation on the value of a checklist.

I enjoyed the debate in the HOD concerning the bylaws changes  then voting "yes" to bring about positive   changes for us at AORN. I thank all of you who attended my presentation, and the positive comments you shared with me. The love, respect, and kindness we show to each other always warms  my heart, and refreshes my soul. I thank you for letting me serve.

This was my 23rd Congress, and I’m never disappointed. The best part of Congress for me is the networking opportunities. I get to communicate directly with many of our leaders. I meet new friends and catch up with others. There are educational sessions to meet everyone’s needs and expand our horizons to learn about procedures that we might not see in our own practices. One of my favorite sessions is QuizBowl. For anyone who has not attended QuizBowl, it is a fun way to learn about current research, which is usually not the most exciting topic to read about in a journal. The Forum and Houses of Delegates allow the opportunity to discuss practice issues and the business of our organization. My very favorite presentation this year was actually a “pre-Congress” Intensive session “Crucial Confrontations.” This program is designed to assist the learner to deal with difficult situations in an effective, non-threatening manner to bring it to resolution for both involved people. The week is very busy, but flies by so quickly. It is intense learning and fun rolled into one week. I can’t wait until next year in Philadelphia .
